Home Enteral Feeding Service

This service provides domiciliary, care home and out-patient based specialist eating, drinking and swallowing assessment, intervention, support, supervision and training on a close to home basis, for clients with a Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG).

The priority, in the first instance, will be to review and assess all clients in the community who have a PEG in situ and input to Nursing Homes has already begun.  Any further identified clients who have a PEG in situ, in the community, who require assessment, should be referred to the service.

These are the main issues relevant to the service:

  • Referrals must be from a general/medical practitioner, in writing, either on the standard Speech and Language Therapy referral form or by letter.

  • The referral must contain information regarding the presenting swallowing difficulty, along with relevant medical history.

  • We aim to respond within two weeks of receipt of referral.

  • Clients will be seen either at the hospital as an out-patient, or at their place of residence, whichever is more appropriate.

  • Assessment may include videofluoroscopy, to be arranged by the Speech/Language Therapist.

  • Findings and recommendations will be sent following our assessment.

  • If the patient requires a thickening agent, we will telephone the patientís GP to organise an urgent prescription.  This will be formalised as a written request in the initial report.

  • If assessment indicates that oral feeding can be commenced, the Speech/Language Therapist will endeavour to notify the GP of the management within 24 hours of assessment such that medical status can be monitored.

The service will also offer Dysphagia Awareness Training and dates and venues have been organised throughout the year.

If you wish to discuss any issues regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact the Speech/Language Therapy Department.
