The UK Hyperacute Stroke Research Network was set up by the National Institute for Health Research in 2010 to improve enrolment of patients into research trials assessing treatments in the hyperacute phase of stroke, when the brain is threatened but not irreversibly damaged. Being able to recruit and treat patients rapidly after stroke requires specialist skills and equipment, and hyperacute stroke research centres (HSRCs) are designed to deliver this.
Hyperacute stroke trials are defined as
1. Within 9 h of onset (as defined by study protocol): any stroke RCT and any observational study where consent is taken within this time frame
2. Within 24 hours: Phase 2 studies, CTIMP and device trials
3. No fixed time requirement: Mechanical thrombectomy RCTs, other RCTs of treatments requiring perfusion based imaging
